I’ll be giving a paper, “A Cheaper Shade of Scarlet: Chinese Consumers, the East India Company, and Global Product Research,” on the EIC’s efforts to engage a global network of dyers, chemists, and merchants to develop lac dye into a viable alternative to the expensive cochineal.
